Kung Jung @ PNB Park, Korean Restaurant

I love having my lunch here because I can have all my favourite dishes in 1 set. My lunch set include rice, 6 plates of banchans, kimchi jigae and a selection of either beef or chicken grill. Not just that, at the end of the course you can choose either to have coffee or tea and altogether will cost you for only RM38.00 (exclude tax and service charge). Kung Jung is now become my favourite korean dining after Koryo Won. I used to go to Koryo Won frequently back then. Banchan selection for lunch is less than the dinner time but do not worry because they are refillable.

Super duper love the kimchi jigae and the combination with banchans (korean mashed potato, anchovies, kimchi cabbage, fishcake, beansprout). But these banchans will not be the same everyday where sometimes I couldn't find anchovies the next time I came which they would replace it with another thing, like spinach etc.

I got introduced this restaurant to my friend, whose husband is a Korean. So we had lunch together and the husband actually like this place (he tried ginger chicken with herbs), and he said the foods here is authentic (considering that he's a korean).
How to get here?

I usually take train and stop at Ampang Park station. Then I will walk from the station to PNB building cause it is not that far. I would say around 100-200 meters. If I drive, I will park in the building itself but have to bare with the high parking rate as we know rate around KLCC area is ridiculously expensive.

Not sure about the operating days. But they open during lunch and dinner but close from 2.30pm to 6pm. As far as I know, they don't serve pork, and on top of that, they have Halal certificates and quite a number of Muslims customer dine here.

Ramadhan Buffet Me'nate @ Starpac

It's Ramadhan,so we decided to try out few places and so after made a quick survey, most of the people in the crowd wanted to go to this place. Booked table for 18 pax and we were lucky cause there were still a few tables left. The waiter ask if we would like to pre order our dinner since there were too many of us. We decided to order 2 short ribs set and 1 whole chicken set. The fact that this restaurant has praying room for both males and females, makes everything easy especially during this fasting month.
At first, I think that these foods that we ordered will not be sufficient but it was the other way round. The short rib set was a bit bland for me. The meat was tender though. We were actually relieved that we didn't picked the wagyu ribs.
The rice that came together with the ribs was nothing to shout about. I don't know whether the temperature was not right or the food? Cause the air conditioning is literally on top of the foods so the meals in front of us was pretty much cold.  Each of the set will get a complimentary bubur lambuk and kuih muih. Not to mention that we also entitled for free flow drinks and of course you have to get it yourself at the drinks counter cause it's a self service. The chicken set was surprisingly a satisfaction. Chicken was perfectly marinated and tender, juicy meat that fall off the bone! Altogether the experience was good and the total bill roughly around rm700++. We got a 10% discount though.

The Manna @ Plaza Damas

Been eying this place since it opened last year. From what I heard from staff who is working in one of the shops in Plaza Damas, the food here is quite good. Upon entering this premise, well I can say that it is a small restaurant indeed. 7 tables inside and a few outside of the shop. There was a "halal meat" plus " no pork" sticker hanging on the glass door. Not many choices in the menu but I think they are pretty much enough to sooth my crave. I bought beef bulgogi which cost me around Rm15++. All time favourite menu if I go to korean restaurant. There were also korean ramyun and kimchi jigaeh. For each meal, will serve with rice , soup and 3 banchan (side dish). Overall I love this korean restaurant and will definitely come again to try other dishes. Located at Plaza Damas just behind the Canteen restaurant. The operating hours is from 10am to 11pm Monday to Saturday. Close on Sunday.

Hammam Bistro @ Publika

I decided to try the Hammam bistro cause I can't seems to resist the Moroccan food. I'm dying to try the food here so after I had my spa session at Hammam, my husband and I chose a table and placed our order. Well I can say that I'm impressed with the decor and ambiance and I can tell that the owner really takes the dining experience seriously cause I felt like I'm in Morocco!.

You don't really need to worry about the availability of the table because there's always plenty of place to sit. When I came, there was only a couple having their dinner, not to say that the place wasn't doing good in business, but I personally think that not many people know about it. I believe it has it's own crowd cause a lot of  people  not really familiar with Moroccan food.

Fresh flowers on the table... I couldn't ask more.

the so called dipping

Lamb Tagine with Prunes (RM45.00) ~ I know right...it's damn expensive for a portion like this!

Tagine Chicken (RM45.00) serve with bread

Tagine Chicken

Saute Mushroom

Overall the quality of the food was good which the saute mushrooms being the top of my list cause it is super good.... I know right???? it's just mushrooms saute with olive oil and garlic.
The bread was good too cause it tastes different from other bread that I've taste before... and the dipping per se, being effortlessly delicious.
I know the Tagine chicken should be the star of the dish, but I'm not a big fan though. But the Lamb Tagine on the other hand kept me licking my fingers cause it was superb. The meat was so tender and you can effortlessly run your knife through it.
About the price, enough said, EXPENSIVE... but hey... once in a blue moon.

P/S: Don't forget to try their baklava. I even brought back 10 pcs of em'.

The Manhattan Fish Market @ e@Curve

To be honest, whenever I walked pass this restaurant I never even bother to look at the menu and don't even have intention to try the food here. But,something went wrong something out of the ordinary came across where one of the staff approached me  and handed over the menu. I took awhile to browse the menu and surprisingly, why I never want to dine at this place? Judging by looking at the illustration of the foods in the menu, the foods look pretty good and sumptuous. Don't want to crack our head to look for place to dine, we decided to have lunch here. We chose set dish cause that was the only dish that is reasonable at that moment. Big portion and cheap at the same time.

Add caption
This serving is actually for two and it is a lot! What's so special bout this set is that, it offers variety of seafood and other side dishes in one plate. There were mussel, fish, calamari, prawns, rice, veggie, and potato wedges. Not to mention that the price is very affordable. I chose the grill platter since I don't really fancy fried platter cause they were  too greasy for me to even finish them.

Still feel so greedy, so I ordered fried mushrooms which I found a bit plain. Thought the dipping would save the day but I was wrong, cause it tasted weird which make the dish tasted. We also received 2 complementary mushrooms soups that you can't really expect too much in cause it's free.

Time to evaluate the main dish; the prawns tasted fresh, while the calamari tasted so-so~, the rice - too oily maybe due to overly-added-butter in it, mussels - I'm fine with it, and lastly the fish is the winner among all the seafood in the plate. I lost the receipt, so I can't state the price of each meal.

Maybe once in a blue moon I'll visit this place.

Victoria Station @ Damansara

This month is my birthday month, and since I won't be able to celebrate with my husband , he decided to make an advance birthday celebration. He took me to a fine dining, I would say...so we headed to the nearest Victoria Station which is in Medan Damansara and just located next to Ayutthaya restaurant.

We made a quick order cause both of us were so hungry. We ordered 1 dozen of escargots (when I think back, it was quite a lot). Last time we used to order 1/2 dozen but we felt like it wasn't enough and  now it turns out to be like a seafood galore for me cause my husband ordered Columbus platter which is something like a seafood combo. What a strange name, maybe they named it after Christopher Colombus....

Bread & Butter
Escargots 1 doz.(RM31.80)

Seafood Chowder Manhattan (RM14.90)

Columbus Platter (RM49.90)

VS Ribeye (RM59.90)

Seasonal Veggie

If you're a seafood lover The Columbus platter might satisfy your gastro need cause in 1 plate there's a prawn, lobster claw, squids and couple of fish cutlet. For both of meals will be served with the veggie for which I wish they could replace the shimeji mushrooms (or whatever they call it) with portobello (just sayin). The seafood tasted fine and how I wish they were fresh, plus I'm not a big fan of squids. My husband in the other hand, loves the prawn and fish cutlets. I remember he mentioned about how perfectly cook the fish is and how it was crispy outside and soft in the inside and bla bla bla...

The place was quite full at that time and so it was kinda busy where I also thought I might be waiting a bit longer for my meals, but fortunately the timing of serving is just perfect. The waiters also never fail to entertain your need as they are so attentive and we don't have to lift our hands for attention. At the end of the dinner, the diners were given a loaf of cereal bread made by the chef himself.

For the next visit: I'm dying to try the lobster.

Restoran Korea Gomonae @ Ampang Point (pork free)

My first question when I saw this restaurant is " Why I didn't know bout this place before?", it serves cheap and authentic Korean food, owned by a Korean lady. So it happens that day I was craving for Korean food so we went to Ampang Point and searched for this place. It was easy to find this place (2nd floor) although a bit hidden but after all, it's only Ampang Point, you can't be really lost in a small shopping complex.

Having a different thought as mine, my partner was on his mission to compare the Kimchi Jigeh between this place and the one in Amcorp Mall. The premise is very small with a few numbers of tables place outside of the shop. Maybe this is the best they can offered, but I didn't bother so much bout the settings and the ambiance because priority goes to the taste and quality of the foods serve.

The view from outside

Kimchi Jigeh (around RM 15++)

Complementary side dishes

BBQ set (around RM15++)

I was a bit disappointed cause the Kimchi Jigeh was not like I expected, instead of using meat, they used fish in the soup. I don't really fancy putting fish in the soup. But the BBQ set save the day, cause the marinated chicken was good, and the combinations of the side dishes, rice and a bowl of soup were completely satisfying. (at least for me). Apologize, cause I lost the receipt, and only assumption of price base on my lame memory would do the tricks.

Recently I received a comment from a reader that she actually realized that one day she saw a delivery guy sent 'mirin' to this particular restaurant and assume that some of the dishes might have been added with this 'white wine'.  I didn't go and investigate so to be on the safe side, it is not a halal korean food, but rather pork free. So, to put us out of this misery, I already changed my post to pork free instead of halal . Thanks to those who highlighted this issue. A pork free restaurant cannot be categorized as having halal food.

Applications of Aptamers

Aptamers???!!! WTH??!!!
Well that was my first impression when I heard this words from my lecturer and trust me, this is the whole class impression. Weird and sounds so alien to me, it is actually approx.  40kD  oligonucleotide, a RNA based,  and I must say, highly specific, ( target oriented).
We were asked to debate about this and the topic is : Aptamer Vs. Monoclonal antibodies. After a very long competitive debate, our lecturer didn't really announce the winner, but he just gave us hints where he rules out the pros and cons of both agents and leaves for us to find out. But, I heard form his opinion, most of the pro goes to Aptamer.
I was the 3rd speaker in the team and my points are related to the application of Aptamers.
This is the debate:

Good evening honorable judge Mr Prasad , opponents and friends. I’m Adibah as the 3rd speaker would like to continue supporting aptamers by explaining the application of aptamers.
Ladies and gentleman, for your information, Aptamers are currently being developed as agents for a wide array of application including diagnostic, delivery tools, therapeutics, and biosensor.
In December 2004, FDA had approved  the first aptamer drug called Pegaptanib and currently marketed by Pfizer and Eyetech as Macugen to treat age-related macular degeneration  (AMD) by targeting vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF), ,where pegaptanib will specifically binds to VEGF165, a protein that plays role in angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels). A phase 2 clinical trial also investigated pegaptanib in treatment of diabetic retinopathy and found improve vision and reduce macular edema.
·         Route of administration: intravitreous injection, implantable devices that delivers small but potent intraocularly.
·         But ranibizumab binds to all isoforms of human VEGFA .
·         To increase aptamer stability is through the use of enantiomeric forms known as Spiegelmers where it enhance nuclease resistance.

Most advance aptamer is the anticancer aptamer named AS1411 formerly known as AGRO100, which currently pass the phase 1 clinical trials. AGRO100 is the 1st aptamer to be tested in humans for treatment of cancer, and 67% patients exhibited a stable disease profile after Phase 1 trial. The drug was administered intravenously and toxicity was assessed. Of the 17 cancer patients under study, more than half exhibited a stable disease profile after 2 months treatment. The most important thing is  absence of side effects that will distinguish apatmers from other drugs that target the malingnant growth. Now UK company planning to start Phase2 trials for renal cancer and acute myeloid leukaemia.
Next candidate for anticancer that show potential is tenascin-C aptamer (TTA1). Tenascin C is expressed on many solid tumours such as glioblastoma, breast, lung, colorectal cancer which make this aptamer wide therapeutic application. TTA1 aptamer also is rapidly cleared by the renal system with half-life less than 2 minutes which gives it advantage as an imaging agent or as a delivery tool.
Aptamers as an anti-HIV
As we all know that there are only limited drug therapy for HIV, and we are thirsty to have new drugs for HIV. And the discovery of aptamer give hopes in this field because it has  excellent potential due to its small molecule, aptamers has become the eligible candidate or major weapon to fight HIV-1.  The drug target the reverse transcription reaction (anti-RT aptamer) and surface glycoprotein for HIV1.
But small is not enough because the development of resistant or mutant species of HIV. So to overcome this, a new approach is proposed where the use of oligonucleotide base strategies (antisense, RNAi, aptamer).

Ladies and gentleman, Aptamers also can work as an anti clotting agent where….
ARC1779 binds to A1 domain of von willebrand factor and inhibit the capacity to bind to platelet membrane glycoprotein 1b receptors thereby show/possessed antithrombotic effects without significant anticoagulant. Currently in Phase 2 clinical trials for thrombotic microangiopathies and in pts with carotid artery disease.
Aptamers as an excellent diagnostic tools.
As Aptamer can be synthesized in the laboratory, it is very convenient to tag them with fluorescent molecules. In the past, diagnostic test was monopoly by antibodies; enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). However, it has recently been shown that a combination use of three aptamers targeting MutS, which is a protein involved in DNA repair, was able to detect the protein over a fivefold variation in the concentration range, something which antibodies have been unable to cover until now.
Aptamer as delivery tools
Aptamer also are being utilized to deliver toxins, radioisotopes, chemotherapeutics agent. Deliver by aptamer give : First. Targeted delivery will reduce harmful side effects associated with the injury to normal cells and tissues. Second, the amount of drug required to elicit response may significantly decrease with targeted delivery. For example cardiotoxicity associated with anthracyclines is common in chemotherapy. Targeted delivery of chemotherapies is one approach to avoid damage to healthy tissue. Several chemotherapy has been conjugated with aptamers, including doxorubicin and cisplatin.
As for the radioisotopes,
The main advantages using aptamer for radioimaging/therapy is because its favorable pharmacokinetics that is rapid renal clearance and their equisite affinity and specificity for targets.

Future candidates of aptamers with therapeutic potential for treating diseases such as treatment of arthritis, decrease in stress and pain, anti-allergic , control of myasthenia gravis, myocardial ischemia, and anti inflammatory.
Lastly I would say that it is too early to anticipate the commercial success that aptamers will achieve. Even the first therapeutic monoclonal antibody (muromomab-CD3) could reach the market only after almost century of research in the laboratory. Aptamers have been the fast sprinters, with the first drug being launched within fifteen years of the technology being developed. Whether this is a race between the hare and the tortoise or if this is a unique case where history does not repeat itself, only time will tell.

Islamic Kitchen Wadihana @ Bandar Baru Bangi

Pretty broke but still want a great , filling food, plus affordable, so I decided to try this restaurant known as Islamic Kitchen Wadihana in Bandar Baru Bangi, of course after did some homework from other bloggers. I'm not really sure with the entire concept of food they serve but, you can find Western, Malay and Chinese food here. The variety of food they offered makes me go gaga, and  I was about to order two meals for myself and luckily my friend stopped me. Back to my rational state, I finally choose, SWIK steak while my friend picked Nasi Goreng Black Pepper.

SWIK Steak : RM 21.90
I never expect that the steak would be this good cause for that kind of price I would assume the steak could be a bit hard in the inside, but it was fine. I asked for medium well, but I think it was semi-medium well, where some part I think it was well done. Honestly, I was satisfied with my choice but my friend, in the other hand, don't find his meal appetizing enough for his taste, cause the nasi goreng taste was ordinary. The only think that special in this nasi goreng black pepper is, they gave 2 chicken wings.

Came with fries, corn and seasonal veggie.

Nasi Goreng B/Pepper: RM 9.90

Ribena Longan : RM 5.90
Teh O Lychee : RM 4.90

Ben's @ Pavilion

I heard about this place form my friends and I was like 'what place is this? ' what kind of food they serve, and what is the concept. So I googled it, and the feedback from bloggers didn't disappoint me. I was suppose to have reunion with my former schoolmates here but due to some unavoidable stuff I had to settle, I just couldn't make it.

As we reached the place, I can see a small crowd  at the entrance which gave me good impression bout' this place. Around 10 minutes of waiting, (in designated area), we manage to get seats but only outside seat available at that moment. I don't really bother about the seating thing, so we walk inside, as I walk by the premise, I feel like I've  been to this kind of place before and wondering where, and finally, owh yeah, this place looks like Delicious. Well considering the owner is the same, so it kinda get a bit influence in terms of interior design.

We manage to get seats outside which I found that the environment and the ambiance outside is better than inside cause having to look at the KL scenery at night from the top  is so breathtaking with all the neon lights. So, I took couple of pictures from top and this is it.

We ordered Spicy Buffalo Wings, which taste more or less like any other buffalo wings, but I prefer Chilis version. The name doesn't really fits the dish cause I didn't really get the spicy taste, I don't know whether I have spicy tolerance or the dish was just not spicy enough. This set came with 2 dipping which I guess a blue cheese dip and I'm not sure of the other one.
Buffalo Wings (RM 15.90)

Come to the main dish, my partner choose a Wagyu Beef Pie. I love this meal and enjoy it very much. This dish came with a generous portion of beef with reasonable price. My main course in the other hand, arrived a bit late and I've got to say that I think I'd made a wrong choice. I ordered Mushrooms Lasagna, and I was expecting the mushrooms would be portobello mushroom but instead it was oyster mushrooms but somehow we manage to finish this meal, lucky me, I don't have allergy towards fungi kingdom except the poisonous family. If you are a big fan of oyster mushrooms, this meal suits you well.

Wagyu Beef Pie (RM 25.90)
Lasagne Mushroom (RM23.90)
Juicy beef and tender

Generous portion of oyster mushrooms.

As for the dessert, we choose,  chocolate truffle torte and there's nothing special with the taste. The chocolate taste is too plain and yeah it came with a glass of milk to counteract the strong chocolate taste.
